How TESOL Training Shed Light in My Career
By: Concuelo Fuentes
The Challenges I had Before Taking TESOL
As a fresh graduate, one of the trials I experienced before taking TESOL were that I had to teach ESL and TESOL in a very unstructured order. All I had were theories from my college education and books online. Although these were helpful, they were very theoretical, and I felt that my teaching was topsy-turvy, and I had no proper credential to teach those who enroll in the school I am employed. Most of them were licensed, Masters Degree holders or professionals with more experience than I had.
The Benefits of taking TESOL
After the 10-day program under the tutelage of Ms. Janet Medina, the managing partner and TESOL trainer of Pacesetters, I felt much more confident with creating my own course outline and syllabi for both ESL and TESOL teaching. It gave me the self-assurance that what I was teaching and planning were supported not only by experts who have had more experience but also by books and references that were provided in the certificate course. This may sound small, but in reality, it was all I needed to be proud of what I was doing and to take away my fear and my insecurity.
The challenges I faced and are facing as an ESL teacher after taking TESOL
At the moment, through the help of Miss Jan, I have removed the barrier I have encased myself in which is lack of confidence - the only obstacle left is the challenge of how to adjust to different personality types of students, different age groups and how to handle various instances where I need to keep my cool. However, through the example Miss Jan has subliminally taught me, I am inspired to follow her example. As she once said, "Teachers are the number one visual aids". Truly, her training was beyond the simple TESOL experience. It was Life Changing.
